Apple is moving away from its dependency on Google, one step at a time. In iOS 6, we get a pretty huge step away as Apple developed its own 3D maps and turn-by-turn navigation based on C3 technology’s work. The question always remained though: who’s providing the map data? According to the latest intel, it’s TomTom, among others. The company widely known for its influence in the world of navigation released a short statement to the press:
“TomTom has signed a global agreement with Apple for maps and related information. No further details of the agreement will be provided.“
So, we’ll probably never find out what Apple is paying for this partnership. But, we do know that one of Google’s money streams is coming to an end. Maps has been on iOS since the very start, and data was always provided by the Android makers. Perhaps the legal battles and hostility between the two companies is spilling outside the courtrooms.
