Canonical launches Ubuntu Tutorials

 
Linux is arguably the most successful open source project in all of history. The success of the kernel -- and operating systems that use it -- are not due to any one man or woman. Actually, the achievements are thanks to the Linux community. In other words, it is a team effort -- developers, users, and more.

For a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, to continue its progress, Canonical needs developers to remain interested -- this includes getting new people involved and educated. This week, the company launched Ubuntu Tutorials -- based on Google's open source Codelab. No, it is not self-learning for new workstation users, but for programmers and developers.

"Ubuntu tutorials are a topic-specific walkthroughs, giving you a very practical experience on a particular domain. They are just like learning from pair programming except you can do it on your own! They provide a step-by-step process to doing development and devops activities on Ubuntu machines, servers or devices," says Canonical.

The Ubuntu-maintainer further says, "You can as well work offline if you desire and always take your tutorials with you! Using the snap technology, we built a tutorial snap including the same content and the same technology as the one you can find on the website."
 
 
Canonical shares the following details about the tutorials.
  • A clear and detailed summary of what you will learn in this tutorial
  • The content difficulty level: you will know where to start from!
  • An estimated completion time for each step and the whole tutorial, so that you plan precisely depending on your availability.
  • A "where to go from there" final step, guiding you to the next logical places to get more information about that particular subject, or the next tutorial you can follow now that you have learned those notions.
Just as the Linux community is a group effort, so shall be Ubuntu Tutorials. You see, Canonical is asking for assistance in creating new tutorials. If you are interested in contributing to tutorials.ubuntu.com, the company shares the rather lengthy guidelines here.

Ubuntu Linux 16.10 'Yakkety Yak' Beta 2 open source OS now available for download

 
Next month, one of the most important desktop operating systems will get a major update. No, I am not talking about Windows or macOS; I am referring to Ubuntu. True, from a market share perspective Linux-based desktop operating systems are rather insignificant, but for those in the know, Canonical's open source OS is quite brilliant. Its fans and users are very loyal and passionate.
 
Today, the final beta of the upcoming Ubuntu Linux 16.10 becomes available. While this version -- dubbed 'Yakkety Yak' -- will not reinvent the wheel, it should offer enough to delight existing users of the open source operating system. Hey, if it's not broke, why fix it, right? That is a lesson Microsoft learned the hard way with Windows 8, but I digress.
 
"Codenamed 'Yakkety Yak', 16.10 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs", says Steve Langasek, Developer, Canonical.
 
Langasek further says, "the beta images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of 16.10 that should be representative of the features intended to ship with the final release expected on October 13th, 2016".
 
While there aren't many new aspects, there are some significant changes. The Linux kernel has been updated to 4.8 and the included GNOME apps have all been updated to 3.20 and higher. The wonderful LibreOffice is now at version 5.2.

Ubuntu 'Snap' now universal -- coming to Linux distros like Fedora, Arch, OpenSUSE, and more!

 
My biggest complaint about Linux based desktop operating systems is fragmentation. There are too many desktop environments, too many package managers, heck, too many distros! Not only can end-users be negatively impacted by too many choices, but more importantly, developers can be spread too thin. Ultimately, the Linux community ends up being unfocused and unable to move the desktop dial.
 
Today, something miraculous happens. Believe it or not, the Linux Community largely bands together to embrace Ubuntu's "Snap" packages. Yes, you are reading that correctly -- competing Linux-based operating systems like Fedora, Gentoo, Arch, and more, will utilize the now-universal "Snap," meaning Linux software can be made to install regardless of distro. This should be particularly brilliant for operating systems optimized for mobile and IoT.
 
"Snaps sit alongside the native packages of the base Linux operating system. Each distribution has its own mechanisms to provide the base OS and its updates. Snaps complement the base OS with universal apps that cannot interfere with the base OS or one another", says Canonical.
 
The company further says, "the snap format is simpler than the native internal package formats of individual Linux distributions, because it is focused purely on applications rather than the core system itself. Snaps are essentially self-contained zip files that can be executed very fast in place, making them easy to create".
 
Canonical shares the following Linux-based operating systems which can now natively work with Snaps.

  • Fedora
  • Kubuntu
  • Lubuntu
  • Ubuntu GNOME
  • Ubuntu Kylin
  • Ubuntu MATE

Mark this date on your calendar, Linux fans. By simply porting snapd to the distro, the Snaps can be installed without worry. This is revolutionary, and will change the way both developers and end-users deal with packages. The container-like design should prove more secure too.
 
 
Jason Shepherd, Director, IoT Strategy and Partnerships, Dell says, "we believe snaps address the security risks and manageability challenges associated with deploying and running multiple third party applications on a single IoT Gateway. This trusted and universal app format is essential for Dell, our IoT Solutions Partners and commercial customers to build a scalable, IT-ready, and vibrant ecosystem of IoT applications".

Canonical releasing Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS 'Xenial Xerus' tomorrow -- will you download it?

 
Ubuntu is one of the best -- if not the best -- desktop Linux-based operating systems. Many people, including me, trust it for their computing needs every day. Best of all, Canonical releases special LTS versions every two years, offering a super-long five years of support.
 
Tomorrow, the latest such LTS version, 16.04, will see its official release. I've been running pre-release versions of this operating system for a while now, and it has been brilliantly stable. Tomorrow's release will be the best Ubuntu ever, featuring things like new snap packages, CephFS, and ZFS-on-Linux.
 
"The security mechanisms in snap packages allow for much faster iteration across all versions of Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives, as snap applications are isolated from the rest of the system. Users can install a snap without having to worry whether it will have an impact on their other apps or their system. Similarly, developers have a much better handle on the update cycle as they can decide to bundle specific versions of a library with their app. Operationally, transactional updates make deployments of snap packages more robust and reliable", says Canonical.
 
The Ubuntu maintainer further says, "also included in this release is support for ZFS-on-Linux, a combination of a volume manager and filesystem which enables efficient snapshots, copy-on-write cloning, continuous integrity checking against data corruption, automatic filesystem repair, and data compression. ZFS-on-Linux is a mature filesystem based on work published by Sun Microsystems under a free software license nearly a decade ago, and which is widely used in cloud and container operations on Ubuntu".
 
While Ubuntu has been a high-quality desktop operating system for years, Canonical is not satisfied there. The company wants to capture some of the mobile market too. Having just launched its first tablet with BQ, the company hopes that 16.04 will become a unified platform for all devices -- including single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi.
Microsoft and Canonical have been very close lately, especially by bringing Ubuntu to Windows 10. Of course, Azure is leveraging Ubuntu too. Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President, Microsoft Cloud and Enterprise division says the following.

Canonical releases Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS 'Xenial Xerus' Final Beta

 
If you are a Linux desktop user, there is a good chance you have used Ubuntu at some point in your life. The distribution is one of the best, offering stability, many available packages, and an overall great user experience. Unfortunately, the last few releases have been rather ho-hum -- boring and evolutionary. Don't get me wrong, Canonical shouldn't fix what isn't broken (as Microsoft often does with Windows), but some users expect a bit more from operating system upgrades.
 
The upcoming 16.04 release looks to remedy this, finally delivering a meaty upgrade to Ubuntu fans. Two major changes are a much improved Unity with the ability to move the dock (woo-hoo!), and a refreshed software store. Today, Canonical releases the final beta, signaling that the true non-beta final version, due April 21, is right around the corner.
 
"Codenamed 'Xenial Xerus', 16.04 LTS continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs. This beta release includes images from not only the Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, but also the Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Mythbuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu flavours", says Adam Conrad, Software Engineer at Canonical.
 
Amazingly, there is only one known major bug in the release. Conrad explains, "in some cases, attempts to install to a hard drive that already contains a swap partition may fail in the partitioning phase. If you encounter this, the simplest workaround is to boot to the live session, start a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) and type 'sudo swapoff -a'. You can then start the installation from the icon on the desktop and it should proceed successfully".
 
Even though this final beta should be rather stable and complete, it is still not recommended for use on production machines. If you want to try it out, I would advise doing so in a VM, separate partition, or even better, a dedicated drive.

Microsoft brings SQL Server to Linux

 
The new Microsoft has placed an increased importance on the cloud, and with other companies following suit, reliance on server solutions has increased.  Today the company announces that it is bringing SQL Server to Linux.
 
Both cloud and on-premises versions will be available, and the news has been welcomed by the likes of Red Hat and Canonical. Although the Linux port of SQL Server is not due to make an appearance until the middle of next year, a private preview version is being made available to testers from today.
 
Microsoft's increasing embrace of Linux sees the company expanding to a wider audience than ever. Al Gillen, group vice president, enterprise infrastructure, at IDC says that it shows Microsoft's "commitment to being a cross platform solution provider".
 
Writing on the Official Microsoft blog, Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise Group at Microsoft, Scott Guthrie says:
Today I’m excited to announce our plans to bring SQL Server to Linux as well. This will enable SQL Server to deliver a consistent data platform across Windows Server and Linux, as well as on-premises and cloud. We are bringing the core relational database capabilities to preview today, and are targeting availability in mid-2017.
SQL Server on Linux will provide customers with even more flexibility in their data solution. One with mission-critical performance, industry-leading TCO, best-in-class security, and hybrid cloud innovations -- like Stretch Database which lets customers access their data on-premises and in the cloud whenever they want at low cost -- all built in.
Microsoft has not yet made clear exactly what other features of SQL Server 2016 will make their way to SQL Server for Linux, but more news is expected over the coming weeks and months.
 
Paul Cormier, President, Products and Technologies, Red Hat said, "SQL Server's proven enterprise experience and capabilities offer a valuable asset to enterprise Linux customers around the world." He continued:
We believe our customers will welcome this news and are happy to see Microsoft further increasing its investment in Linux. As we build upon our deep hybrid cloud partnership, spanning not only Linux, but also middleware, and PaaS, we’re excited to now extend that collaboration to SQL Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, bringing enterprise customers increased database choice.
While the full launch of SQL Server for Linux is not due until the middle of 2017, SQL Server 2016 is expected to launch later this year.

Ubuntu Linux 15.04 Vivid Vervet is here

 
Today is Wednesday, aka "Hump Day". The middle of the work week can be quite the miserable day. If you are stuck in a soul-sucking corporate job, it means you still have a long way to go before the weekend brings sweet release.
 
Don't worry, people, I have good news; this is a very special Wednesday. Why? One of the world's best Linux-based operating systems, Ubuntu, sees a stable and final release of 15.04, codenamed Vivid Vervet (it's a type of monkey). At the end of today's work day, you can hopefully go home and try out the latest version of the popular Linux distribution -- once the download links go live, that is.
 
"Today Ubuntu 15.04, codenamed Vivid Vervet, is released with a host of new features for clouds and servers. 15.04 comes a full year since the last Long Term Support (LTS) release and a year before the next LTS so represents a milestone in which we bring in and start to settle down features we want to have in 16.04. At Canonical, we see 15.04 as being all about containers. And OpenStack. And containers on OpenStack", says Canonical.
 
The company also says, "Ubuntu is the favorite environment for Linux developers, celebrated in products such as the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition. This release introduces new tools for cloud and IoT development as well as making the desktop more productive with integrated menus and dashboard usability improvements".
 
I have been testing pre-release versions of Ubuntu 15.04 on the wonderful System76 Meerkat (review coming soon) with great results. The operating system is extremely stable and Unity is getting better all the time.
 
 
With that said, for workstation users, it is once again a boring release. Quit frankly, boring is a positive here, as Canonical does not need to reinvent the wheel with every update. Change for the sake of change can upset the core group of users. Hell, just look at Microsoft with Windows 8!
 
Ubuntu 15.04 ships with Linux Kernel 3.19, and not the fresh 4.0. While users can build and install 4.0 themselves, there really is no urgent need to do so. As you can see in the image below, I was successful in implementing 4.0 on Vivid Vervet, but it was not necessary.
 
 
If you are an existing Ubuntu user, there is no reason not to upgrade; the new version is wonderful, as long as you do not expect anything other than an evolutionary experience. If you are curious about Linux and want to try a distro for the first time, Vivid Vervet is a great place to start.

Android's Material Design reaches into Linux


A new OS has been proposed, based on Linux and Android's Material Design specifications. Jack Wallen opens up his hat of supposition to imagine the possibilities this platform could bring to life. 

 
The Linux kernel reaches deep fingers into that of Android. So, it only makes sense that the circle would be completed with Android holding sway over the Linux desktop. But how could a mobile platform inform a desktop platform? Two simple words...
 
Material Design.
 
If you haven't yet taken a peek through the material veil, this new design is the driving force behind Android Lollipop and looks to reinvent the way developers design their apps (and users experience the environment). You can check out the full specs on the official Material Design site. With these design specifications, you can be sure your Android apps blend in perfectly with the new ecosystem.
 
Or you can develop a desktop operating system.
 
That's what Quantum OS is -- a Linux desktop that conforms to Google's Material Design guidelines. You might be thinking this isn't really a big deal. Someone takes either Ubuntu or Arch Linux and creates an Android-like shell to serve as an interface. On a rather low level, you might be right. The developers are simply creating a new desktop shell using Qt 5 and QML to create a very Android-like, interactive environment. They even have mockups of what they expect their efforts will return (Figure A).

They're planning this UI framework to be cross platform, so it'll work on Linux, OS X, and Windows.
 
On the surface, this looks like a fun project (one that I'll most certainly be testing out the second that it's available). But let's dig a bit deeper and consider the implications here. I'm not talking about having a desktop platform that merely follows the design specs for Android's new ecosystem. I'm talking about something special -- the possibility of a happy accident this project could create.
 
Walk with me for a moment.
 
We've already witnessed Android apps running on Chrome OS (Evernote, Cookpad, and more). Imagine that Quantum OS succeeds with Material Design to the point that they're able to easily run Android apps on the platform with little extra effort. By adhering to the Material Design specifications, they've already opened the door.
 
I understand the design element isn't the challenging aspect of getting one platform's apps to run on another. But we've already witnessed, thanks to ARChon, Android apps running on Linux. This is a two and two that can easily be calculated. If Quantum OS can converge Material Design and ARChon into one cohesive unit, something very special will be born -- a truly convergent desktop. Think about it... having a Linux desktop that allows you to easily run your Android apps without having to pick up your smartphone.
 
The possibilities have become limitless. All thanks to Material Design and developer Michael Spencer. Even if Quantum OS doesn't fully deliver, the seed of creation has been planted, and the idea of realizing Material Design on the desktop shows a vast untapped potential.
 
This is all thanks to Linux, open source, and Android. Three core components that have revolutionized the computing world in ways many do not recognize. The trick now is to bring them together in a way that will further the revolution and converge technology to make life and business simpler and seamless. Android and Linux living together on one comprehensive desktop.
 
Imagine the possibilities!
 
Bridging these two ecosystems makes perfect sense. Canonical has been desperately attempting to bring the phone and desktop environments together (with Ubuntu Linux and the vaporware Ubuntu Phone). However, a new mobile wheel doesn't need re-invention. Quantum OS only need follow through with their current intent and then blow a hole through the creative roof by adding the necessary pieces (such as ARChon) to bring Android apps to their Material Design desktop.
 
It sounds simple, though it's most likely not. But the seed has been planted, and it should be allowed to germinate and spread. Yes, the work may be challenging, but the reward would be massive. I tip my hat to Mr. Spencer and his goals. I see big things with Quantum OS and fully believe in the project.

Linux distro Ubuntu 15.04 gets its name -- Vivid Vervet

 
Ubuntu has become one of the most popular and influential distributions of all time. It is easy to use, well designed and has a large and helpful community. Despite its general greatness, it uses a rather silly naming convention, based on sequential letters. That letter is used in the start of two consecutive words; the first being an adjective and the second being an animal. Is it fun? I suppose. Actually, it isn't too different than Android, which also uses sequential letters, but for yummy sweets.
 
Today, Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical CEO, announces the latest name, for the upcoming 15.04. For this release, the letter V is being used. The adjective? Vivid. The animal? Vervet. Yes, the next version of Ubuntu is Vivid Vervet, but what the hell is a vervet?

"This verbose tract is a venial vanity, a chance to vector verbal vibes, a map of verdant hills to be climbed in months ahead. Amongst those peaks I expect we’ll find new ways to bring secure, free and fabulous opportunities for both developers and users. This is a time when every electronic thing can be an Internet thing, and that’s a chance for us to bring our platform, with its security and its long term support, to a vast and important field. In a world where almost any device can be smart, and also subverted, our shared efforts to make trusted and trustworthy systems might find fertile ground. So our goal this next cycle is to show the way past a simple Internet of things, to a world of Internet things-you-can-trust", says Shuttleworth.
 
The CEO further explains, "in my favourite places, the smartest thing around is a particular kind of monkey. Vexatious at times, volant and vogie at others, a vervet gets in anywhere and delights in teasing cats and dogs alike. As the upstart monkey in this business I can think of no better mascot. And so let's launch our vicenary cycle, our verist varlet, the Vivid Vervet!"
 
OK, so Ubuntu 15.04 is being named after a monkey. Actually, that monkey can be seen above, where a baby is suckling on his moms teat. Of course, the name is inconsequential, as the performance and features of the Linux-based operating system are the truly important things, right?

Is iOS 8 Spotlight Search Similar to the Ubuntu Dash?

If you’ve played with an iPhone or iPad running iOS 8 you might have spotted a new feature in Spotlight — a feature that bears more than a passing resemblance to a key part of the Ubuntu desktop.
  
Let me preface this by saying that good ideas catch on. That is a good thing. In culture, in literature, or in technology: we all benefit when people are free to take an idea and develop it in new, different ways. It’s a concept that most open-source frameworks are built on. Don’t like something? Fork it!
 
Back to Apple’s rejig of the Spotlight search feature in iOS 8. Apple has given Spotlight new features, features similar to those debuted by Ubuntu a few years back. Spotlight is now a search hub, for want of a better word.
 
Like in the Unity Dash, Spotlight in iOS 8 will throw up results from online sources, including iTunes, Wikipedia and Bing, alongside local files, photos and apps. It will even serve up relevant app suggestions where applicable — just like Unity’s ‘recommended software’ section.
 
 
Results are grouped based on their source, with a small thumbnail shown alongside a brief snippet or link.
 
For example, typing in “Spiderman” throws out an App Store link and Wikipedia entry on the comic book character. Depending on the search term you may see movie times, nearby events or business, relevant web links, and so on.
 
 
Again, as with Unity, certain results can be clicked to reveal a short preview or snippet:
 
 
But unlike the Unity Dash there are no Amazon product results rearing their head thus far. But when you’re a company worth over half-a-trillion dollars, it’s not like you need them!
 
Apple do not (yet) have plans to allow third-party services to add in and extend the search functionality, something Ubuntu does allow through its “Scopes”.

Applentitlement

Now, by this point in the comparison, fervent Mac fans will be foaming at the mouth, incredulity rushing to their fingers, calling them into commenting action. To be fair, they have some reason to feel the need to rebut through Helvetica ALL CAPS.
 
Why? Well, firstly, the notion of a visual hub collating local files, apps, emails, contacts, music and other items is not novel or ‘unique’ to Ubuntu. Spotlight has long been a mainstay of Apple’s mobile and desktop OSes, and various Linux desktop shells/apps over the years have attempted similar things.
 
Secondly, it can be argued that the first true fusion of local and remote results to use smart matching began with productivity apps like Alfred, which served as inspiration for GNOME Do, Kupfer and, by extension, Synapse.
 
But it is only with iOS 8 (and the upcoming release of OS X 10.10 ‘Yosemite’ on the desktop) that Apple is expanding its search reach to cover ‘contextually relevant’ results in a way more accessible to the user.

Seriously, Don’t Miss the Point

Playing a game of “Who did what first” never ends well. And it’s not really what this article is supposed to be about. It’s about showing how different companies, projects and OSes tend to converge on the same problems but go about solving them in different — or not so different in this case — ways.
 
There is no shame in this. Is it likely that Apple actually flat out copied Ubuntu? Probably not. Inspired by it? Possibly…but given the insular nature of the Cupertino design team, even that would be a little arrogant to assume.
 
What this feature does show is that Canonical, in bringing this feature to the desktop and making it front and centre of their mobile OS, is acutely tuned to react and adapt to changing habits of users. While not always a hit in the implementation — the smart scopes server matching remains a little scattershot — they are often ahead in willing to break the status quo.
 
This instinct for what’s next bodes well for their mobile domination plans.

Has Samsung beaten Canonical at its own game?

Jack Wallen digs into the upcoming Samsung Tizen release to uncover how the mobile giant managed to beat Canonical to the Linux-phone punch.  


The Samsung Z is set to hit Russia in the third quarter of the year. This phone is powered by the open source Tizen operating system. For those who didn't know, Samsung has been quietly developing Tizen in the background for three years (Tizen already powers the Samsung Gear watches).
 
I firmly believe Samsung is testing the Tizen waters to see if the platform could be a viable alternative to Google's Android OS. If any company could pull off such a feat... it would be Samsung. But beyond the implications Tizen has to Android (the most used platform worldwide), what does this mean for the near vaporware status Ubuntu Phone?
 
Plenty.
 
While the Ubuntu Phone is still struggling to gain any serious momentum -- anywhere -- Samsung has already set a date for its open-source device. The latest worthwhile news from the Ubuntu Phone camp was March 19, 2014, stating that "big smartphone brands [are] looking 'seriously' at Ubuntu Phone." Prior to that, the big news was that Spanish-based BQ and China-based Meizu announced they were set to release Ubuntu Phone devices "sometime in 2014." 
 
2014 is officially half over.
 
That silence is fairly damning in a world that demands a constant deluge of updates -- especially when a powerhouse such as Samsung announces they are set to release the first, mass-produced, open source, Linux-based smartphone. Samsung beat Canonical to the punch, and if the Samsung Z does well in Russia, it'll be released to the rest of the world. Should that happen, the likelihood of the Ubuntu Phone having a chance, in an already saturated market, is unlikely.
 
Think about it this way. The IDC reports:
  • Android powers nearly 80% of the world's mobile devices
  • iOS powers just over 15% of the world's mobile devices
  • Windows phone powers just over 3% of the world's mobile devices
  • BlackBerry powers just under 2% of the world's mobile devices
There is a scant 1% left over for "Other."
 
Because Samsung already has such a strong presence in the Android market, and because their devices are found everywhere, they could chip away (even slightly) at both the Android and "Other" markets. The Ubuntu Phone will most likely be relegated to the "Other" market. That's not much to pull from. Those low numbers will make it a huge challenge for Canonical and the Ubuntu Phone. To make matters worse, the longer it takes for the Ubuntu Phone to make its way to market, the smaller that user base will be. That's the crux of the issue -- time. Canonical announced its intention to create a Ubuntu Phone some time ago. Since then, it's been nothing but promises and a failed fundraiser for Ubuntu Edge.
 
The tragedy of this is that the Ubuntu Phone could well be one of the finest mobile devices to date. But because Samsung is going to likely beat Canonical to the punch, that brilliant piece of tech might flounder... simply because it couldn't get into the fight soon enough. And now, with Samsung delivering their own open-source smartphone, the chances they would join in on the Ubuntu Phone fun are pretty much nil.
 
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the Ubuntu Phone released and enjoy a massive success. I would personally drop my current device, without hesitation, for an Ubuntu Phone -- but I don't see that happening any time soon. In fact, the likelihood that I could get my hands on a Tizen-based phone seems exponentially greater than the Ubuntu Phone.
 
Canonical needs to understand that timing is everything in this light-speed paced world in which we live. You cannot announce a product one year and deliver it the next. By the time you release, everyone has already moved on to the next great shiny thing. At the moment, that shiny thing might be the Samsung Z.
 
At least for Russia.

HP's The Machine kicks Microsoft to the curb in favor of Linux

Jack Wallen offers a few pieces of advice for the development of The Machine, a new HP device that will run an OS that's based on Linux instead of Microsoft.  

My how the times have changed. At one point, HP and Microsoft were sharing friendship bracelets and having slumber parties. In fact, over the last decade, HP was a major player with Microsoft. Those days are gone. The juggernaut that was once Microsoft is slowly toppling and companies like HP are seeing the writing on the wall. That writing includes the likes of Android, Linux, iOS -- platforms perfect for mobile and embedded systems.
 
To that end, Hewlett Packard has decided to kick Microsoft to the curb and develop their own operating system that will power all of their future devices. In particular, HP is working on a device they call "The Machine." This new device will be made up of several new technologies -- including a new type of memory -- and will run a new operating system based on...
 
Wait for it...
 
Linux.
 
This is a rather bold move. HP is placing all of its eggs in a single, open-source basket. Should this succeed, Meg Whitman will look like a genius. Should it fail... I think we know where that leads.
 
This new operating system will be based on Linux and designed from the ground up to work with non-volatile memory. HP plans on stripping away everything unnecessary to the new devices so the platform is perfectly streamlined for all new hardware.
 
To HP, I have a few pieces of advice for the development of this new platform.

Place high priority on the design of the desktop

Think about it this way -- it was the interface that ultimate caused the failure of Windows 8. HP needs to really up the ante on the interface and ensure whatever they create does the following:
  • Works flawlessly on both desktop and mobile devices
  • Offers a modern look yet zero learning curve
  • Keep it clean
  • Use a stable compositor
  • Design for end users, not developers
One of the problems that plagued the GNOME 3 was that it seemed to never take into consideration the end users. Developing for designers, programmers, and elite users will get you nowhere in the grand scheme of things. All user interfaces must be created with the average user in mind. In other words -- make it beautiful and intuitive.

Market, market, market

If I've learned anything over the years, it's that an average product is greatly improved by amazing marketing. Apple is the king of marketing. In fact, their marketing team is so good that they managed to convince a vast user base that they needed, not just wanted, their products. To one up themselves, Apple managed to convince the user base that Apples way was the only way. HP needs to think along those lines. Without that level of marketing, this new HP initiative will fail. Why? Look at the competition. If "The Machine" is a convergent mobile device, they already are climbing an uphill race that Apple is winning (unfortunately, Canonical has yet to produce a viable product).

Pre-install everything

As this will be a Linux-based operating system, make sure to include everything the user will need out of the starting gate. Windows users are accustomed to getting their machines and then installing everything they need to get their work done (along with paying the price for that software). Make sure to include the standard fare for a Linux install. Leave nothing behind in this venture. With just a few inclusions (such as LibreOffice and GnuCash), end users will be shocked to see they have an out-of-the-box product that's ready to go and ready to work.

Make it cloud-friendly

This should go without saying. Make sure The Machine works flawlessly with the likes of Google Drive, Dropbox, and all of the other major cloud players. This should be the case for both desktop and mobile versions.

Don't skimp on the hardware

Another reason Apple has succeeded as well as it has is hardware. They've gone to great lengths to design beautiful hardware. Do not just crank out standard-issue gray or black boxes to house The Machine. You are going to need to make a serious mark. This will be an opportunity to take the reigns of a fast-moving, hip stagecoach and move it into a completely different direction. The company that designs the next "it" product will win. That may well be Apple. It could, however, be HP. If The Machine winds up the next "it" product, HP will have done for Linux what other companies have tried for over a decade and failed.
 
There should also be high importance placed on the design of a laptop -- better yet, an ultrabook. Closely examine what Google did with the Pixel. Make sure that the hardware can be seen as highly functional, technological works of art.
 
HP could be on the verge of changing the very landscape of technology. They not only have the know-how, but the capital and street cred to pull this off. I've been saying, for years now, that if any company could bring Linux to the average user's desktop -- it's Canonical. They've tried, but they haven't succeeded on a level necessary to take over the desktop. HP, on the other hand, might well be able to pull this off.

Hands on with Ubuntu 14.04: The best Ubuntu desktop ever

Summary: I still find Ubuntu with Unity the best desktop of all for users who don't know computers and just want something easy to use.
 
Lately, Ubuntu has been getting a lot of flack from other Linux users for going its own way. For example, Canonical, Ubuntu's parent company, eventually plans on using its own Mir display server instead of the more broadly supported Wayland, and that's annoyed many non-Ubuntu Linux developers.
 
That "inside baseball" criticism aside, I've found the latest release of Ubuntu 14.04 , Trusty Tahr, to be an outstanding Linux desktop both for new users and for professionals.
 
Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity 7 desktop.
I've been checking out the Trusty Tahr since its beta two release and I've been very pleased with it. I've been testing it in a VirtualBox virtual machine (VM) on a newer high-end Dell system and on two older test systems: The first was my 2007 Dell Inspiron 530S, which is powered by a 2.2-GHz Intel Pentium E2200 dual-core processor. This PC has 4GBs of RAM, a 500GB SATA (Serial ATA) drive, and an Integrated Intel 3100 GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) chip set. The second was a 2008-vintage Gateway DX4710. This PC is powered by a 2.5-GHz Intel Core 2 Quad processor, 6GBs of RAM, a 1TB SATA drive, and an Intel GMA 3100 for graphics.
 
My point in listing these systems' stats in detail is that Ubuntu works just fine even on seven-year old systems.
 
It's also worth noting that Ubuntu 14.04 is a long-term support (LTS) version. That means that Canonical will be supporting this desktop Linux for five years. In turn, if you use an older PC you could get as much as 13 years of use out of it before you'd need to buy a new PC—just try that with Windows.
 
Installing Ubuntu remains as easy as ever on older PCs: Download the Ubuntu ISO, burn it to a DVD, boot your PC from the DVD and follow the instructions. If you're stuck with a Windows 8/8.1x PC, dealing with Secure Boot can still be a pain. The easy way around this is to go to the UEFI menu as you boot your PC and disable Secure Boot.
 
As an LTS, Ubuntu 14.04 doesn't have a lot of new features nor has there been much in the way of changes under the hood. Canonical has decided, for example, to not pull the old stable X window server and the Unity 7 shell for the graphical interface for the newer Mir graphics stack and Unity 8. You'll see those appear first in Ubuntu's smartphone and tablet efforts.
 
If you want, you can give Mir and Unity 8 a try. To do that, open a terminal and enter the following command:
 
sudo apt-get install unity8-desktop-session-mir
 
That's the quickest, cleanest way to install Mir and Unity 8. Both projects are under heavy development so be ready for regular changes.
 
That said, Unity 7 is a completely polished desktop now. If you still love GNOMEKDE, or one of their variations such as the GNOME-based Cinnamon you're not going to love Unity. There are, of course, versions of Ubuntu 14.04 that use other desktops. These include: Ubuntu GNOME; Kubuntu with KDE, and Lubuntu with LXDE.
 
If you haven't tried Unity lately, though, and you can keep an open mind, you should give Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity a try. It's much smoother than when it first appeared. In addition, I still find Ubuntu with Unity the best desktop of all for users who don't know computers and just want something easy to use.
 
Ubuntu has made several minor changes to Unity that have lead to major advantages in usability. The first of these is that Unity now has the option of using local menus again. In earlier versions of Unity you had to live with your applications' menu choices being in the master menu bar, ala Mac OS X. That's OK, but if you use a big display—I'm writing this using a 23-inch Samsung monitor—then your menu choices can be a long, long way from your application. By giving you a choice of having them on the main menu bar or on a more traditional local application menu bar, you get to pick what works best for you. For me, with my large monitors, its local menus all the way.
 
As for its base operating system, Ubuntu uses the Linux 3.13 kernel. This includes security and networking improvements.
 
For applications, Ubuntu has stuck with its usual defaults. It now uses LibreOffice 4.2.3 for the office suite; Thunderbird 24.4 for e-mail; and Firefox 28 for the Web browser. As always, you can install the programs you want if those don't please you via the Ubuntu Software Center.
 
Canonical has also taken out one feature: its own personal cloud storage program Ubuntu One. You can replace its functionality with Dropbox, Google Drive, or any of many other personal cloud storage services.
 
At the same time, it's kept one controversial feature: Built-in search scopes for such commercial sites as Amazon and eBay.
 
If you can't stand these built-in searches, you can disable them manually by going to the terminal with the following command:
 
settings set com.canonical.Unity.Lenses disabled-scopes "['more_suggestions-amazon.scope', 'more_suggestions-u1ms.scope', 'more_suggestions-populartracks.scope', 'music-musicstore.scope', 'more_suggestions-ebay.scope', 'more_suggestions-ubuntushop.scope', 'more_suggestions-skimlinks.scope']"
 
Personally, these smart searches don't bother me.
 
Put it all together and what I see is a mature, smooth Linux desktop that would work well for either business or personal use. While old-school Linux users may never learn to love Unity, I think most others will find this latest Ubuntu a true pleasure to use. I know I did.

Google propels Linux to the top

Find out why Jack Wallen believes that Google has single-handedly helped Linux become one of the most popular platforms on the planet. 

 



Ah, Google. Never before has a company brought about such crazed and polarized opinions. Depending on who you speak with, they're funneling your information to NSA, they're controlling where you find content, they're the reason why small businesses have thrived (or not), they house Bigfoot, Elvis, and Jim Morrison…
 
Or not.
 
Google has also, much to the chagrin of many in the open source community, single-handedly helped Linux to become one of the most popular platforms on the planet.

Oh no, good ladies and gentlemen; I uphold my original statement and shall reprise with my blade.
 
Let’s follow some logic, Spock.

  • Google is responsible for Android and Chrome OS
  • Android is becoming one of the most widespread platforms on the planet
  • Chromebooks are the best selling laptops on Amazon
  • Both Android and Chrome OS are based on Linux
What Google has done for Linux, over the past few years, no other company has managed to pull off. By releasing two major platforms, both getting the most out of a Linux kernel, Google has put Linux in more hands than Canonical, Red Hat, SuSE, and any other company to have attempted to bring to life the Linux platform.
 
It’s taken a mobile platform and a completely new take on the “desktop OS” to pull it off. Not the server, not the standard desktop... nothing like anything the open source community would have expected.
 
Chrome OS is a particularly interesting facet to the gem that is Linux. This relatively new platform, based on Linux and created by Google, is gaining ground faster than any operating system ever has, thanks to dirt-cheap hardware and an amazingly simple interface. But it’s much more than that. Everyone has always assumed that Linux is one of the more secure operating systems on the planet. But what about Chrome OS? Recently, the Google-hosted Pwn2own competition shed light on three vulnerabilities within Chrome OS. All three were nearly impossible to find, but there they were.
 
However, Google immediately patched them. This was after shelling out over $150,000 to the winners of the competition. How brilliant is that? Use a well-known competition to help patch your platform, and pay the hackers for their efforts. Within short period, Chrome OS had its only discoverable vulnerabilities fixed. What other platform can lay claim to that?
 
Google is doing everything right for getting Linux into the hands of the masses — something that has been a dreadful enigma for countless companies and developers before them. But Google isn’t just getting it out there, it’s doing it the right way — giving the people what they want and doing so in a way that isn’t going to leave them open to attacks, viruses, malware, downtime, and much more. One company is redefining the Linux platform and security in general.
 
Yes, people have been hesitant to hop onto the Chromebook bandwagon, but that general opinion is quickly changing. Chromebooks are handily outselling MacBooks and Windows 8 ultrabooks. And Android? During 2013, Android accounted for 81% of smartphones sold worldwide.
 
That is serious market share — and that, my friends, is Linux.
 
No matter your opinion of the Google juggernaut, you cannot deny what they’ve managed to pull off with the help of Linux. Are they perfect? Not at all. Sure, they’ve injected a host of proprietary software and not released code under the GPL; and to the purist, that is a serious strike against all things open. But for those more concerned with ol’ war cry of World Domination? Well, it looks like it’s happening... thanks to our good friends at Google.

Linux rules the universe by behaving exactly how the user wants

Although the Head Up Display (HUD) will remain the default, Canonical will be bringing back the local menus as an option. Jack Wallen responds to this announcement.



Canonical recently announced that local menus will be returning in the upcoming 14.04 release.

And the crowd goes wild!

Not so fast. I have to shake my head at this. I'll preface that head-shaking by first admitting that I'm a fan of the Head Up Display (HUD). I find it an efficient and elegant solution to the old application menu system. What is the HUD? The HUD is a global replacement for application menus that allows you to quickly search through an application menu system for what you’re looking for. Watch the video below to see a demonstration of how it's used:



When Canonical introduced this new menu system, a vast majority of the open-source community tossed their arms up in the air and cried foul. They wanted the standard, local menu system back.

Maybe I'm a bit naive, but I don’t get it. This is the same community that prides itself on keyboard shortcuts, macros, working with text editors that make zero use of the mouse or standard menu systems. This is the same community that demands an efficient, clean interface. How much more efficient and clean can you get than Unity’s HUD?
 
You can’t... unless you’ve developed a Neuromancer-Snowcrash-Matrix interface between your brain and the operating system. But that has yet to come to fruition -- "yet' being the operative word.
 
One of the biggest differences between open-source and proprietary software is that the public actually does have a voice. If we were talking about Windows or Apple, it would be a different story. Canonical heard the voices and reacted with the upcoming release. The local menus will be an available option, but not the default. So, with this release, you can have your cake and eat it too. If you don’t like the HUD, enable local menus (in the Appearance pane of the Unity Control Center).
 
But I still don’t get this need to cling to the past. The computer interface has evolved to meet two things:
  • Modern aesthetics
  • Demand for high efficiency
Ubuntu Unity, as it is, has done an outstanding job of meeting those two needs. Yet, there's a continued pull backward toward the old metaphor.
 
One of the aspects of Linux that I'm proud about is that it's always been a leader in innovation. If you look at the cutting and bleeding edges of nearly every envelope attached to technology, you’ll find Linux and open source there.
 
Canonical (and Ubuntu) has taken a lot of flack for pushing boundaries that no other platform has dared push. This flack mostly comes from within the Linux community. Personally, I love being able to work from my keyboard alone (Figure A). Yes, it took me a while to get used to -- all the while, my hand was instinctively reaching for the mouse. But once I managed to retrain my thinking and process, I found the HUD to be one of the most efficient tools I’ve ever used.

I don’t want anyone to think I’m bashing the whole of the Linux community. Everyone should be able to use their PCs in the way that best suits their needs. That’s where Linux has always ruled the operating system universe -- its ability to look and behave exactly as the user wants. And this move of Ubuntu’s proves just that. Anyone who jumped the Ubuntu ship because of the HUD can hop back on and have their interface just the way they want it.

What to expect from Ubuntu in 2014

Summary: Ubuntu 2014: One Linux codebase to rule them all: smartphone, tablet, and desktop.

You won't see an Ubuntu Edge at CES this week. Ubuntu's parent company, Canonical, raised $12.8-million on Indiegogo to develop and build this Ubuntu Linux/Android-powered Ubuntu Edge combination smartphone and PC, but it still fell far short of its $32 million goal. So what?

To gadget hounds, what Canonical has planned for 2014 may not be as tasty as the all-in-one Ubuntu Edge, but if its plans come to fruition they'll be more important than just another sexy device.
 
After, finally, shipping Ubuntu Touch in October 2013, Canonical's version of Ubuntu for smartphones, the company's partners will start shipping smartphones in major markets. In the United States, T-Mobile and Verizon are expected to ship Ubuntu smartphones.

Ubuntu Touch: The next hot smartphone operating system

Canonical hopes to become the number three mobile operating system, after Android and iOS. To make this happen, the company is depending on Ubuntu’s good looks, the Ubuntu Touch's eye-candy interface. The business is also betting on an improved software delivery system that gives developers a fast way to deliver updates while preserving user security.
 
Rather than using a permission at installation mechanism, such as that used by Android, noted Marc Deslauriers, Canonical's security tech lead, "users get to make decisions on sensitive actions at the moment they are needed, instead of at application installation time. This is performed by system components called "Trusted Helpers.'"
 
Ubuntu Touch applications can only access their own directories, and their own data. Instead of granting permissions to access generic user data, Ubuntu grants access to request user data using Trusted Helpers. This allows applications to access specific data as approved by the user instead of granting permissions to access all of it.
 
"For example," Deslauriers explained, "instead of granting permission to directly access a user’s complete contact list, an application can request access to a contact. The system address book will display a list of contacts and only the specific contact selected by the user will be sent to the application. The application only has access to the contact which was specifically authorized by the user."
 
Once given, a user can either grant an app the right to use Trusted Helpers to always pull data from that one resource in the future or to continue to ask permission each time. Thus, "Trusted Helpers allows users to specify which private information can be accessed by applications. The decision to grant these permissions is done at the moment the access is needed, giving the user the appropriate context for making an informed decision."
 
The end result: Users get more control and developers get their app updates pushed to users very quickly. This should make Ubuntu Touch popular to both.

Ubuntu 13.10: A desktop tour

On the software side, Jono Bacon, Ubuntu Community Manager, wrote recently on Google+ that by "This time next year we will have a single platform code-base for phone, tablet, and deskto that adapts to harness the form-factor and power of each device it runs on. This is not just the aesthetics of convergence, it is real convergence at the code level. This will be complemented by an Ubuntu SDK (software developer kit) in which you can write an app once and deliver it to any of these devices, and an eco-system in which you can freely publish or sell apps, content, and more with a powerful set of payment tools."
 
Bacon continued: "These pieces will appear one phase at a time throughout 2014. We are focusing on finishing the convergent pieces on phone first, then bringing them to tablet, and then finally bringing our desktop over to the new convergent platform."
The end result will be one Linux-based operating system for smartphones, tablets, and desktops and single applications that will work on all three platforms.
 
And that, friends, is more exciting to me than the hottest new hardware to makes its appearance at CES this week.

The success of Linux doesn't rely on Microsoft's garbage

Find out why Jack Wallen doesn't think Linux should be installed on old, unsupported Windows XP machines.
With Windows XP about to finally meet its demise, many users are espousing its replacement with Linux. It makes perfect sense, because there will be millions of machines out there that are no longer supported by Microsoft. Those millions of machines can either add to our already insurmountable garbage problem, or they can continue to be used, sans updates.
 
Microsoft Windows without updates. That's little more than a security vulnerability in the wings. It would only be a very short matter of time before each and every one of those machines came crashing down. Instead of letting that happen, it's a very seductive proposition to grab a Linux distribution and resurrect that old machine. Why not? It's been part of the war cry of Linux for the longest time.
 
Honestly, I'm all for keeping those millions of machines out of the scrap heaps, but I don't know how I feel about the Linux community crying out for everyone to use their out-of-date hardware for Linux. The success of Linux as a legitimate desktop operating system cannot, in any way, hinge on dumpster diving in Microsoft's garbage. In fact, winning the desktop war -- on any front -- cannot (and will not) be had by picking up any of the slack that smacks of the past. Success must begin in the present and quickly move into the future.
 
Consider this: The speed at which technology advances is now faster than ever. Yes, there's a large faction of people who hold onto the past (for various reasons, such as financial), but the vast majority of people who hold any influence over the world technology look to the future. This is also true of the mobile computing world -- it's all about the latest and greatest. The "what have you done for me lately" mindset is thick. 
 
With this in mind, Linux needs to embrace the future in ways that no other platform can. But how? By leading the charge of evolution and breaking ground that has yet to be broken. Linux has always been in a very unique position as a platform -- the open source nature means it's not beholden to a corporate entity, nor does it have to follow the same “rules” that tend to shackle Windows and OS X. Linux is free to do and be what it wants. With that wind behind its sails, Linux can re-define how people think about and use their PCs.
 
Canonical is doing just that with Unity, Xmir, Touch, and more. Although a good percentage of the Linux community is barking up a rather angry tree about the change they're bringing about, it's time they all got over themselves. Linux needs change -- from top to bottom -- and the Linux community needs to let go of the old ideas and ways, because the “I've always done X and X should be the way it is” mindset only hamstrings the platform. Linux needs to be agile, and if it can reclaim its ability to dodge the punches and adapt with lightning-quick reflexes, then there's nothing it can't do in this over-clocked evolutionary society.
 
Yes, people may grouse about change, but most quickly get over it when they realize that change is for the better. When Linux developers honestly listen and take the suggestions from the community to heart, all those major changes to the desktop can evolve in such a way as to absolutely benefit the end user -- and that is advancement for the people that the masses can stand behind.
 
However, if Linux continues to hold on to the same dusty war cries it's espoused for years, it won't get anywhere. Sure, Linux can resurrect that old hardware. You can slap Puppy Linux on it, but all you'll get is a lightning-fast computer that can't interact with modern business in a satisfying way. Plus, you'll have an old-school interface and a cumbersome package management system. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not dogging on Puppy. In fact, I like Puppy Linux... just not as much as I like the idea of Linux pushing the boundaries of modern modality and showing the computing world just what it's capable of.
 
Linux has more untapped potential than any other platform. It's time we all embrace a “Linux for the future” idealism and slough off the old “stuck in the past” platform. More than any other platform, Linux can boldly go where no OS has gone before and do so faster. Care to join me?

Ubuntu 13.10: It just works

I've been using Ubuntu for a very long time. I was one of the few in the media who adopted Unity as my primary desktop interface. In fact, I've grown so used to Unity that I have trouble finding any form of efficiency in other desktops. So, naturally, when a new Ubuntu release is about to be unleashed upon the world, I grab a beta and install it.

The hype surrounding the upcoming 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) was fairly significant. Leading this charge was the much-anticipated switch to Xmir. Well, thanks to a few show-stopping issues (such as dual-monitor support), Xmir has been pushed back to 14.04. Is this a big deal? Yes and no. Yes, because Xmir will be a major change to the sub-systems of Ubuntu. No, because Xmir must be faultless when released -- otherwise, the backlash will knock Canonical back so far in the past that they'll have a hard time recovering in the eyes of the Linux community.

Beyond Xmir, the biggest change from .04 to .10 is the much-maligned inclusion of Smart Scopes. What are Smart Scopes? Let me explain it in the simplest terms as possible.

When you open your browser and begin typing a string of characters, you know how that browser will make suggestions for you based on search terms, location, and history? Smart Scopes brings that same functionality to the desktop. I've run some tests on it, and it's pretty incredible. Search for nearly anything, and it will return results based on a number of criteria. Want to know the location of a restaurant in your area? I conducted a search for my favorite Mexican restaurant, Bazos, and an entry appeared in Smart Scopes (Figure A). Click the entry to get the address or open that entry in a web browser to get more information (and even reviews).

I get it, there are people out there suffering from apoplectic fits of terror because Smart Scopes is an invasion of privacy. This is no different than what your web browser is doing. So, unless you constantly run your web browser in Incognito mode, all those search strings are saved and compared anyway. And the truth is, why wouldn't you want your search results based on your preferences and behavior instead of some generic algorithm? Personally, I don't mind my search results being quantified and qualified, so long as it constantly refines the search results based on my needs.
Smart Scopes isn't limited to seeking out search results from the network. You'll be happily searching for anything and everything on your local (or locally attached) drives as well. With this inclusion, Smart Scopes becomes one of the single most powerful search tools available.
Of course, if you don't like Smart Scopes, you can turn them off. Here's how:
  1. Click the Settings launcher
  2. Select Security & Privacy
  3. In the Search tab, turn Include online search results to Off (Figure B)

With all of that said, let's step away from the arguments for or against search privacy and let me explain exactly why Ubuntu 13.10 is the perfect desktop for nearly any user.

The install was fresh from the latest daily build. During the installation, I included third-party software, updates, and was even able to authenticated to my UbuntuOne account. The install was incredibly simple (as most modern Linux distributions are), and at first login, everything was smooth.

What initially struck me about Ubuntu 13.10 is how everything worked out of the box. There was no need to install codecs to listen or view various multi-media files, flash worked, and everything was ready for average, daily computer use. You could work on office documents, set up your email account... you name it. But that has become the standard operating procedure for Ubuntu.

So, what's different? Honestly, not much. However, what little difference there is should go a long way with the average user. Probably the single most important thing I've found is that a lot of the little quirks and oddities are gone. There are no longer any strange errors that randomly pop up to cause confusion and disdain among new users. Windows don't artifact or stall, the Dash is very responsive (as is Smart Scopes), and the compositing is smooth and effortless against your CPU. Also, the bug is resolved that plagued the Dash when trying to use the arrow keys to navigate through search results.

Ubuntu 13.10 just works

I would go as far to say that Ubuntu has done to the desktop what Apple did with hardware/software -- it developed a clean, solid convergence of pieces to create a cohesive whole. Although that whole has ruffled some feathers, Ubuntu 13.10 should go a long way to smooth them out. How is that possible, considering how many users have turned their back (thanks to the Wayland kerfuffle)? 
Outside of Smart Scopes, there are no major changes. There's little excitement on the desktop -- it's still the same old look and feel. Oh sure, there are tiny tweaks here and there, but overall, 13.10 and 13.04 look the same at first blush. Under the hood? Same thing. You'll find a new kernel (3.11) and a few other tweaks, but nothing to cause the cheerleaders of the world to frustratingly toss their pompoms in the air.
Instead, Ubuntu 13.10 is a refinement of something that was already there and polished. There are no show stopping or curtain call worthy new features --  just countless tweaks here and there that make the whole system run smooth and fast. 
The final release of Saucy Salamander is set for October 17, 2013 (Today). You can get a copy of the daily build or wait for the release date. Either way, you're going to get a solid, reliable platform that just works.
