Charles Schwab says no to Windows 10 -- chooses Chromebooks instead

 
When it comes to get working done, I leverage many operating systems -- Windows 10, Ubuntu, iOS, and believe it or not, even Chrome OS. Google's cloud-focused desktop OS is actually quite capable -- depending on needs, of course. Many things work wonderfully in a browser nowadays, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and photo editing.
 
Apparently, Charles Schwab has seen the light on Chromebooks too, as the financial company has chosen them for a specific need -- in-person account opening. In other words, the much-respected company did not choose Windows 10 for this project. Sorry, Microsoft!
 
"We needed an intuitive interface that not only educated potential clients about our product but also made it easy to sign up. We tested several laptops and tablets that weren’t the right fit, before I reached out to Google. That was on a Friday and the following Monday, Google engineers came into our Phoenix engineering facility. By lunchtime, we landed on a solution that was quick to deploy, very easy to manage and use, and offered the high level of security that we demanded: Chromebooks", says Ed Obuchowski, Senior VP of Advisor Technology Solutions, Charles Schwab.
 
Obuchowski further explains, "opening a Schwab Intelligent Portfolios account on a Chromebook is easy. When a client walks into one of our branches to learn more about automated investing, an associate hands the client a Chromebook. Within seconds, the client is guided to a Charles Schwab webpage, where he or she can learn about the product, complete a questionnaire and open an account. The whole process is electronic, so there’s no paperwork -- minimizing errors and time spent on administration."
 
 
True, the need here is not very heavy -- a Windows 10 computer would be overkill for a webpage-focused account application. But that is the beauty of Chrome OS! There is no need to worry about malware and high administration costs -- Chromebooks and Chromeboxes just work! For a client-facing portal, the Linux-based operating system is a brilliant way to keep sensitive information secure.
 
 
The company was able to implement 1,000 of the computers in just two months time. The company was so impressed with the results, that it is now looking to implement Chrome OS desktops (Chromeboxes) in locations too.

Why is Google bringing Android apps to Chromebook?

 
Answer: Your kids. Chromebook leads laptop and desktop sales through U.S. commercial channels to schools, according to NPD. Education is overwhelmingly the primary market for the computers. The institutions can't buy enough of the thangs, for their utility and low-cost compared to notebooks running either OS X or Windows. That cost is as much about extended webapps and services from Google (or its developer partners), available for free or comparatively next-to-nothing, set against software for the other platforms.
 
Wrinkle in the Google firmament: iPhone and Chromebook are like water and dirt. The sediment settles unless shaken up. Sure youngsters can do all their Googly things—Docs, Gmail, Maps, Photos, YouTube, etc.—on iOS but the experience is smoother and more homogenous when mixed Android and Chrome OS. What the kiddies lack, and their educators, is a swath of useful apps like the Apple kids get.
 
Market That Matters
 
Think about it. Yesterday at its annual developer conference, Google unveiled plans to bring Android apps to Chrome OS, which churned some excitement across the InterWebs. But for whom? Coincidentally, or not, a month after IDC released first quarter PC shipments there were news stories about Chromebooks outselling Macs. How conveniently timed for Google.
 
"Chromebooks have outsold Macs in commercial channels during the 'high season' for K-12 sales (April-August) for the last three years", Stephen Baker, NPD's vice president of industry analysis, says. "Even off-season Chromebooks in commercial channels outsell Macs and iPads combined—so this is a trend that has been happening for awhile".
 
Three years? The majority go to schools, and adoption accelerates. "Chromebook sales in commercial channels have increased by 28 percent in the first four months of 2016 vs last year", Baker says.
 
Putting Android apps on Chromebook creates greater synergy among devices running either of Google's platforms. The Alphabet subsidiary seeks to make Android all the more appealing for the most-likely Chromebook user: School kids. Apple devices are the intended collateral damage, despite Big G's continued support for iOS.
 
Device Synergy
 
Mobile is huge for the search subsidiary, regardless of platform. During the first day Google I/O keynote, execs revealed that: more than half of search queries come from mobile devices; one-quarter of queries are from voice ("OK, Google"); 600-plus new Android smartphones launched this year (Seriously?); there have been 65 billion app installations from Google Play.
 
Meanwhile, a bunch of new home-grown Android apps or services are coming in 2016—Allo, Assistant, Daydream, Duo, and Family Library, among others. With more American K-12 students using Chromebook every month, many of them also using Android, and Google wanting to increase their numbers, the new strategy is as much about the kids as adults—greater based on my analysis.
 
Ah, but there is a catch. The earliest school adopters may find their laptops hanging from the gallows in a cold wind. Initially, starting next month, only three models—Acer R11, Asus Flip, and Google Pixel 2—will support Android apps on Chrome OS. A much, much, much longer list will be certified later in the year. But there are some surprising, head-turning omissions, like the original Pixel, which remains a powerhouse compared to most of the other laptops listed.
 
That said, most Chromebooks will be certified for Android apps, and, again, the majority are used in schools—in the United States, at least.

Chromixium: A new Linux distro with a Chrome OS twist

A long time Ubuntu fan, Jack Wallen opts to depart from the safe and familiar in search of something new. That search led him to a very Chrome OS-like Linux distribution called Chromixium. 

 
I already know what you're asking... why do we need a Chrome OS knock-off when we already have the real deal (and the real deal is dirt cheap)?
 
The answer to that question is two fold: 1) Because it can be done; and 2) Because you probably have plenty of older hardware sitting around that could easily power a Chrome OS-like operating system.
 
Recently, I had to reinstall the primary OS on my production machine. I opted to try something different than Ubuntu, so I started looking around at new distributions. In the end, the decision came down to two distributions:
I wound up going with Elementary OS Freya, but the decision was a challenging one. Why? Because Chromixium is incredibly well done and works as efficiently and easily as Chrome OS. In the end, however, Elementary OS Freya won out, because it offered a much superior audio recording experience.
 
Even so, Chromixium is an outstanding choice for anyone wanting Chrome OS on non-Chromebook hardware. What does it offer? Here are some of the features:
  • LTS Linux PAE Kernel 3.13
  • Chromium web browser (with the option of using the proprietary Google Chrome)
  • Pepperflash plugin
  • Openbox window manager
  • Compton desktop compositor
  • Plank dock
  • LXPanel
  • GTK+3 for a consistent look and feel
For anyone who has been around Linux long enough, the use of Openbox window manager (derived from the old-school Blackbox window manager) should be intriguing, especially in conjunction with a compositor. Openbox has been around for a while (initial release was 2002) and has always been lauded for its speed and small footprint. With Chromixium built on a Linux kernel, with a lightning fast desktop designed to mimic Chrome OS, what is there not to love?

Why you should try Chromixium

I can sum this up in a few quick bullet points:
  • If you've used Chrome OS and would love to see it with just a bit more flexibility
  • If you have aging hardware and want a solid OS to use
  • If you're looking for an incredibly easy-to-use OS that can serve just about any purpose
  • If you like the idea of Chrome OS with native apps like LibreOffice and GIMP
  • If you like the idea of Chrome OS but need much more local storage
The list, seriously, goes on and on.

Why you should not try Chromixium

Again, I can sum this up in a few bullet points:
  • You hate Linux
  • You hate anything that resembles a Google product
  • You'd prefer the Chrome OS experience with the incredibly fast-booting Chromebook hardware
  • You depend on applications that aren't available for the Linux platform

Installation

As with most Linux distributions, you can "try before you buy" by running Chromixium as a live instance. Once you've tried it, you'll probably want to install it. The installation of Chomixium is as simple as installing any Linux distribution. You simply boot from the ISO image (download here and burn it onto a DVD or USB flash drive), log into the desktop with the credentials Username: user / Password: user, and click the Install icon in the Panel.
 
You'll need to enter the sudo password user in order to start the installation process. The installation wizard is very user friendly and shouldn't toss anything your way that you haven't seen before.

Setting Chrome as the default

Out of the box, Chromium is the default browser. This is fine, except for the fact that you might find certain sites don't function quite as well with Chromium. If you'd prefer to use the official Chrome as the default browser, you'll first need to install it. Here's how:
  1. Open up Chromium
  2. Go to the Chrome download page
  3. Download the 32 bit .deb (For Debian/Ubuntu)
  4. Click Accept and Install
  5. Click Save to download the file to your Downloads folder
  6. Once it's downloaded, close the browser
  7. Open Files (the default file manager) from the dock
  8. Navigate to the Downloads folder
  9. Double-click on the file google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb, and it will open in the Package Installer
  10. Click on Install Package and enter your password when prompted
  11. When the installation finished, close the Package Installer
Now to set Chrome as the default, follow these steps:
  1. Open a terminal window by hitting [Control]+[Alt]+[T]
  2. Enter the command sudo cp /usr/bin/chromium-browser /usr/bin/chromium-browser-old and type your sudo password when prompted
  3. Enter the command sudo ln -s -f /usr/bin/google-chrome /usr/bin/chromium-browser
At this point, Chrome will be your default browser.

The caveats

Chromixium isn't perfect (what do you expect from a 1.0 release?), and one of the biggest issues I've come across is that installed applications do not appear in the menu. Although the menu is great for all your Chrome apps and searching, it does next to nothing for those apps you install via Synaptic or the command line. There is, however, a bit of a hidden menu that allows you access to more of the Linux side of things. If you right-click anywhere on the desktop, the OpenBox menu will appear. Within this menu, you can:
  • Launch locally installed applications
  • Launch the Control Panel
  • Run commands
  • Change the desktop wallpaper
  • Logout/shutdown
  • Gain quick access to settings (Figure A)

With the help of this menu, Chromixium becomes the best of both worlds. At first blush, you might wish to have these two menus integrated as one. However, given enough thought, you might come to the same conclusion I did... separately, they're much more powerful. After using the dual menus long enough, I realized the two were better left apart. This separation means better Google integration without getting muddied by the plethora of available Linux applications. Most likely, you'll spend the majority of your time on the Google side of things, but when you need a bit more, it's just a right-click away.
 
The last issue you might find is the lack of a clear and obvious front end for package management and an update manager. Chromixium offers Synaptic, GDebi, Ubuntu Software Center, dpkg, and apt for the management of packages. This is too much (Figure B).

Chromixium needs to settle on one and leave it at that, because the primary user base for Chrome OS want simplicity. Instead, they'll find Synaptic in the Applications | System, the Ubuntu Software Center in Applications | Internet, GDebi in Applications | System, Software & Drivers in Applications | Settings, Automatic Updates in Applications | Settings... you get the idea.
 
The developers need to rein this in to avoid confusion.

Conclusion

If you're looking for one of the simplest Linux distributions, one that's very well integrated with Google, you need to give Chromixium a closer look. I've yet to come across a Linux distribution that does as good of a job at mimicking Chrome OS. Being a fan of the Google platform, this might eventually wind up being a perfect confluence of design and execution. For a 1.0 release, Chromixium is seriously impressive.

Why Evolve OS could win you over to Linux and me away from Ubuntu

Jack Wallen has found the one take on Linux that could possibly move him away from his distribution of choice since 2006.  

 
There are so many Linux distributions, each one claiming that they are the one flavor best designed for the new user in mind. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS -- all outstanding distributions and very much ready for users who want a platform built on the premise that Linux isn't nearly as challenging as many people assume.
 
In 2014, a new distribution appeared out of nowhere, one that cut straight to the heart of the matter and promised to deliver a Linux distribution like no other. That distribution is Evolve OS. For the longest time, the distribution was in a state of limbo, and the best you could do was download an alpha and hoped it would run. I tried a number of times and finally opted to just install the Budgie desktop on a Ubuntu distribution. That attempt gave me an idea of how Evolve OS would look, but not much more.
 
All of that changed last week when the beta of Evolve OS was finally released, and the distribution could finally be tested against what's considered the gold standard of user-friendly Linux distributions.
 
It not only fared well, it crushed the competition.
 
I should probably preface this by saying that I'm already a bit biased towards the Budgie interface. It's a near clone of the Chrome OS UI -- beautiful, elegant, and simple (Figure A). It makes lesser hardware sing, and it's quite stable for a beta.

Evolve OS is built from scratch, using a fork of the PiSi package manager, and it's integrated with the GNOME stack to avoid technical debt and needless overhead.
 
What's underneath the hood will not concern the new user -- but what will is the complete lack of a learning curve. Any user could hop onto Evolve OS and feel right at home. At the heart of that is the similarity to the Chrome OS UI. Although the Chromebook, by nature of its design, does have limitations (I should also mention that I'm a big fan of the Chromebook), the UI is as flawless an interface as you'll ever find. Evolve OS takes perfect advantage of this and re-creates that platform, sans limitations.
 
Imagine the Chromebook with the ability to run full-blown applications and work seamlessly offline. That's the very heart and soul of Evolve OS. With a simple menu, notification area, and panel, Evolve OS enjoys a familiar desktop metaphor that has worked for decades with the modern, minimal twist of Chrome OS.
 
From the user's perspective, Evolve OS borrows the following from the GNOME stack:
  • Files -- GNOME file manager
  • Maps -- GNOME map tool
  • Weather -- GNOME weather app
It must be said that Budgie is not a fork of GNOME 3. Budgie was built from scratch and uses its own window manager and panel. Outside of the listed apps above, most of the borrowed GNOME stack is underneath the hood.

Why Evolve?

The answer to this question is quite simple. If you're a fan of Chromebooks but long to be able to add an addition layer of usability and power on top, Evolve OS is for you. If you're looking for the epitome of elegance on a desktop, Evolve OS is for you. If you're looking for the single lowest barrier to entry for Linux, Evolve OS is for you.

Why not Evolve?

It's very important to remember that Evolve OS is in beta. This means that you'll find tiny corners that are a bit rough. Take, for instance, the Software Center (Figure B).

The Software Center is quite limited at the moment. With a minimal amount of available packages to install, you'll find yourself having to go the old-school route and install manually. Evolve OS uses the eopkg, which is a fork of the PiSi package manager. You can install a package with a command similar to:
 
sudo eopkg install audacity
 
Personally, I'll be following Evolve OS closely to see when the distribution comes out of beta. When it does, it's quite possible that I could evolve from Ubuntu to this incredibly easy-to-use take on the Linux environment. That's a fairly impressive task for any new distribution -- to take me away from my Linux distribution of choice since 2006.

Chromebooks are in trouble -- HP unveils $199 Windows laptop and low-cost tablets

 
When I bought my first Chromebook, the 2012 Samsung model, I did it mostly for one reason -- price. I drove down to my local Best Buy and was blown away by how inexpensive it was; at $249 it looked like a MacBook Air and promised good battery life. Even though I knew the limitations of Chrome OS beforehand, I still handed over my money thinking I could find a place for it in my home. For the most part it was OK; I mean, it changed the way I thought about computing, but it soon became apparent that it could not replace my Windows machine. I didn't return it; I kept for basic typing on the go, but I later sold it as it collected dust. You see, my iPad Air when coupled with a keyboard-case was a better portable machine.
 
Now, in 2014, Chromebooks are making huge strides in homes, schools and the enterprise, but Windows still reigns supreme. While I do recommend Chromebooks for people low on cash that only have basic computing needs, today this changes. You see, HP announces the $199.99 Stream 11 laptop, and with a price that low, why would you bother with Chrome OS?
 
"Customers can enjoy entertainment in high-definition (HD) with an 11.6 inch HD display or 13.3 inch HD optional touch display. While the innovative fanless design with high efficiency Intel Celeron processor and 32GB of eMMC flash memory allows for quiet, cool operation and quick file recall. Stunning colors and stylish gradient design available in Orchid Magenta and Horizon Blue are sure to turn heads", says Hewlett Packard.
 
While HP is tight-lipped on specs, according to Engadget (who got to play with them in person), they will be powered by a Celeron N2840 CPU and 2GB of RAM. Battery life is promised to be up to 8 hours and 15 minutes, which is more than enough for a day of college classes or some quiet time at the library. Speaking of quiet, it is fanless, so there will be no noise from a whirring fan. Best of all though, both models have HDMI output, so they can serve as a media machine when connected to a TV, or desktop when connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Hell, the 13.3 inch model can even be quipped with a 4G modem that comes with 200MB of data per month for life.
 
Arguably, the only downside is the limited colors. They look to me to be pink and purple, but HP calls them "Orchid Magenta and Horizon Blue". Wasn't there a children's TV show called Blue's Clues with a dog named Blue and a dog named Magenta? Maybe that show was the inspiration, but I digress; while colors should be gender neutral, these colors seem to me as a bit feminine, at least as society has traditionally dictated. I would have no problem owning and using a pink laptop, but I can foresee it being an issue for some shoppers. An option for black or silver would probably be appreciated.
 
HP has also announced new tablets, powered by an Intel Atom Z3735G. Sadly, the slates will only have 1GB of RAM, and I am worried that it will not be enough. Hewlett Packard says, "the HP Stream 7 and HP Stream 8 Windows tablets keep customers connected to work, friends and content all at an exceptional value. The cloud-connected, Intel-powered 7 inch and 8 inch tablets include one year of Office 365 Personal and 60 minutes of Skype each month, 1TB of Microsoft OneDrive storage for one year,  and a full Windows 8.1 experience. The HP Stream 8 tablet includes an optional 200MB of free 4G data each month with no annual contract for the life of the device".
 
HP lists the following prices:
  • The HP Stream 11.6 inch diagonal starts at $199.99.
  • The HP Stream 13.3 inch diagonal starts at $229.99.
  • The HP Stream 7 Tablet starts at $99.99.
  • The HP Stream 8 Tablet starts at $149.99.
Sure, this $199 HP Windows laptop is hardly top of the line, but it is more than enough for the average home user. Believe it or not, the laptops even come with a $25 credit to the Windows Store, for buying apps or games. Technically, with that said, you could look at the price as only being $174.99 -- a steal.
While I hate putting down the Chromebook, it is just impossible to justify a purchase of a low-end Google-powered machine when you can buy a true PC for under $200. Don't forget, running the Chrome browser in Metro Mode on Windows is pretty much the Chrome OS experience anyway. Low-end Android tablets are safe for now, but trouble could be on the horizon there too; if Microsoft closes the app-gap (a big "if"), a $99 Windows tablet could be very attractive.

Google shows off new designs for Chromebooks, extends battery life, increases offline capabilities

In a joint press conference, Google and Intel announced lighter Chromebooks with 11+ hours of battery life and new offline capabilities. Will it be enough to entice the enterprise?

At a joint press conference on Tuesday to unveil improvements in Chrome devices, Google and Intel introduced new processors for Chromebooks, talked up big battery life improvements, and showed off the ability to do more things offline.
 
Navin Shenoy, vice president of the PC client group at Intel and Caesar Sengupta, VP product management at Google, took turns addressing new features and products that have come from the two companies' partnership around Chrome OS.
 
Here's a quick summary of the main announcements:
  1. Chromebooks based on Intel's i3, Haswell, and Bay Trail processors
  2. Bay Trail devices will be thinner and faster with over 11 hours of battery life
  3. 20+ designs, with Intel being the only processor providing 64-bit to Chromebooks
  4. Chromebooks gaining traction in education, deployed in nearly 10,000 new schools
  5. New offline capabilities to watch movies and TV shows with Google Play Movies app
  6. Some Intel processors now being made conflict-free
Shenoy started with the Haswell-based products by highlighting a bright teal-colored HP Chromebox that would be available in June and a $349 LG Chromebase, which is an all-in-one desktop machine that was announced at CES 2014.
 
The beginning of the press conference was targeted at enterprise customers. Sengupta made a specific mention of business customers, including Auberge Resorts, that made the switch to Chrome from XP. Shenoy mentioned the popularity of the Chromebox with the enterprise, and mentioned that the HP model would have integrated hangout features like the Chromebox for meetings.
 
Google has already been aligning itself with trusted enterprise providers such as VMware and Citrix. Linking arms with Intel is a major step toward Google establishing itself as a major player in the enterprise. 
 
"Intel is a top contributor to the Chrome OS," Shenoy said. "We are now the number two contributor to Google for open source."
 
The Bay Trail devices will, more than likely, be one of the key offerings to potential business customers. The Bay Trail processors have strong performance and don't use a lot of power, which helped Google extend the projected battery life of this new crop of Chromebooks to over 11 hours. The previous models topped out around 10, although some Chromebooks got far less than that. ASUS, Acer, Toshiba, and Lenovo are all planning Bay Trail Chromebooks. 
 
Sengupta also reminded the audience of the updates that are pushed to Chromebooks every six weeks, absolving the users of manually updating the devices. That's a value-add for many IT departments that have to devote a lot of resources updating client machines.
 
The processor announcements were capped off by unveiling a Core i3 option for Chromebooks. An Acer Chromebook will be available at $349 with Core i3 this summer and Dell will be adding an i3 option to one of their Chromebooks as well. 
 
Chromebooks' momentum in education was also highlighted. Chromebooks are now in nearly 10,000 new schools, continuing the traction that Chromebooks have already already gained. Intel showed off their reference platform for an education Chromebook alongside a few other models that were geared toward education customers, touting smaller sizes and increased durability. Intel has long been trying to catalyze the education market with devices such as its Classmate PC. The partnership with Google is a win for Chromebooks, since Intel has obviously chosen them as a potential winner in low-cost education devices.
 
One of the last major announcements was Intel's push to produce conflict-free processors. Processors contain tantalum, tungsten, tin and gold, all of which can be mined in conflict zones, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, by enslaved workers. 
 
Other interesting announcements included the addition of Google Now and voice actions to Chromebooks, and more offline capabilities with Google Play. Offline functionality is a big deal in the enterprise since businesses don't want workers to be stuck if they have spotty connectivity. While the offline capabilities announced don't directly affect productivity features, they show Google is getting more conscious about the importance of offline capability.
 
"You can choose to be productive with Google Docs, or completely unproductive with your TV shows," Sengupta said.
 
Chromebooks are available in 20 countries and will be available in nine more over the next few months. No mention of a Chrome tablet just yet, but Shenoy said "we're aggressively pursuing new form factors." 
 
When questioned on the possibility of a Chrome tablet or Android clamshell, Sengupta narrowly skirted the question; ending his response, by saying, "We're going to keep innovating."

Google propels Linux to the top

Find out why Jack Wallen believes that Google has single-handedly helped Linux become one of the most popular platforms on the planet. 

 



Ah, Google. Never before has a company brought about such crazed and polarized opinions. Depending on who you speak with, they're funneling your information to NSA, they're controlling where you find content, they're the reason why small businesses have thrived (or not), they house Bigfoot, Elvis, and Jim Morrison…
 
Or not.
 
Google has also, much to the chagrin of many in the open source community, single-handedly helped Linux to become one of the most popular platforms on the planet.

Oh no, good ladies and gentlemen; I uphold my original statement and shall reprise with my blade.
 
Let’s follow some logic, Spock.

  • Google is responsible for Android and Chrome OS
  • Android is becoming one of the most widespread platforms on the planet
  • Chromebooks are the best selling laptops on Amazon
  • Both Android and Chrome OS are based on Linux
What Google has done for Linux, over the past few years, no other company has managed to pull off. By releasing two major platforms, both getting the most out of a Linux kernel, Google has put Linux in more hands than Canonical, Red Hat, SuSE, and any other company to have attempted to bring to life the Linux platform.
 
It’s taken a mobile platform and a completely new take on the “desktop OS” to pull it off. Not the server, not the standard desktop... nothing like anything the open source community would have expected.
 
Chrome OS is a particularly interesting facet to the gem that is Linux. This relatively new platform, based on Linux and created by Google, is gaining ground faster than any operating system ever has, thanks to dirt-cheap hardware and an amazingly simple interface. But it’s much more than that. Everyone has always assumed that Linux is one of the more secure operating systems on the planet. But what about Chrome OS? Recently, the Google-hosted Pwn2own competition shed light on three vulnerabilities within Chrome OS. All three were nearly impossible to find, but there they were.
 
However, Google immediately patched them. This was after shelling out over $150,000 to the winners of the competition. How brilliant is that? Use a well-known competition to help patch your platform, and pay the hackers for their efforts. Within short period, Chrome OS had its only discoverable vulnerabilities fixed. What other platform can lay claim to that?
 
Google is doing everything right for getting Linux into the hands of the masses — something that has been a dreadful enigma for countless companies and developers before them. But Google isn’t just getting it out there, it’s doing it the right way — giving the people what they want and doing so in a way that isn’t going to leave them open to attacks, viruses, malware, downtime, and much more. One company is redefining the Linux platform and security in general.
 
Yes, people have been hesitant to hop onto the Chromebook bandwagon, but that general opinion is quickly changing. Chromebooks are handily outselling MacBooks and Windows 8 ultrabooks. And Android? During 2013, Android accounted for 81% of smartphones sold worldwide.
 
That is serious market share — and that, my friends, is Linux.
 
No matter your opinion of the Google juggernaut, you cannot deny what they’ve managed to pull off with the help of Linux. Are they perfect? Not at all. Sure, they’ve injected a host of proprietary software and not released code under the GPL; and to the purist, that is a serious strike against all things open. But for those more concerned with ol’ war cry of World Domination? Well, it looks like it’s happening... thanks to our good friends at Google.

The first Beta of Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 is here -- Linux fans, download it now

Linux is on a roll lately, as Android and Chromebooks continue to gain marketshare. While this should be a win for the open-source community, many purists do not consider Android or Chrome OS to truly be Linux. Of course this is not true, as both operating systems utilize the Linux kernel. However, I understand where Google detractors are coming from; a distribution like Ubuntu is more the traditional approach to using the kernel.
 
While I too love Ubuntu, I am not a fan of Unity. While I do not hate Canonical's environment, I simply prefer and adore GNOME 3. Today, the first Beta of Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 is here. It's time to brush off that DVD burner, and write that .ISO!
 
"We're preparing Ubuntu GNOME 14.04, the Trusty Tahr, for distribution in April 2014. With this early Beta 1 release, you can see what we are trying out in preparation for our next version. We have some interesting things happening, so read on for highlights and information", says the Ubuntu GNOME team.
 
The team touts the following highlights:
  • Gnome-shell 3.10 is now included.
  • Many apps have now been updated to GNOME 3.10.
  • gnome-weather, gnome-maps, gnome-photos and gnome-music are all available to install from the archives
  • GNOME Classic session is included. To try it, choose it from the Sessions option on the login screen.
Remember, this is a Beta release, so it is not recommended for a production machine. The reason being, there may be bugs and ultimately, you could lose valuable data. You can read about known issues here. If you must try the operating system, it would be preferable to install this on a spare hard drive or virtual machine.

Schooled by Linux -- 1,700 students get Ubuntu laptops

 
Linux is everywhere; from mobile phones to web servers. Even Chromebooks run Linux. Ironically, Chrome OS is a poor platform for actually learning about the open-source kernel. This is because Google's OS is limited by design. And so, it does not behave like a typical Linux distribution.
 
Instead, students would be better served by using a true Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, Fedora or Mageia. With that said, a forward thinking school in Pennsylvania has done just that. Penn Manor High School has purchased 1,700 laptops running Ubuntu.
 
According to the school, "each student received an Acer TravelMate TMB113 laptop, mouse, flash disk and case. Kits were distributed, by grade level, during the week of last week of January 2014. The bulk of the distribution took 4 days. During distribution, students received an orientation session to help them get started with the new laptop".
 
Handing out laptops to students is not news, but the underlying OS is -- Ubuntu 13.10. This is an up to date, easy to use distribution, which will allow the students to learn more about Linux. Somewhere in the world, Linus Torvalds is smiling.
 
Believe it or not, the school has not locked-down the machines for software installation. Students can explore all aspects of the operating system and install the software of their choosing. The only caveat is that they respect copyright laws as well as the school district's policies.
 
However, web content will be filtered. "As required by the Children's Online Protection Act, (CIPA) each laptop is equipped with a filter to block material deemed harmful to minors. Filters are enabled both on and off campus", says the school. Regardless of your stance on censorship, protecting the morals and minds of high-school students is a positive.
 
The school should be applauded, not only for thinking outside of the Microsoft and Google box, but for embracing open-source philosophy. These students will learn more than how to use Facebook and Microsoft Word. Not to mention, besides the students benefiting, so does the Linux community. Future open-source evangelists and programmers may be bred from Penn Manor High School.

Does security matter to you? Ditch Windows XP for one of these upgrade options

Microsoft officially ends support for Windows XP in April 2014, but there are plenty of upgrade options available. Andy Wolber takes a look at some conventional and alternative OS options. 

 
 
If you use Windows XP or Office 2003, after April 2014, you’re living dangerously. XP will run, and you can still work with Office 2003 apps, but Microsoft’s support for these systems ends that month. As a result, systems running XP and Office 2003 will be increasingly vulnerable to attack.
 
Microsoft will update anti-malware signatures for Windows XP through mid-July 2015. But anti-malware updates may not address system or software level flaws. Google will update and secure Chrome on Windows XP through April 2015. Yet using a secure browser on a potentially insecure operating system seems unwise. People using Windows XP and Office 2003 should upgrade.
 
Fortunately, upgraders have options. You can choose from at least seven operating systems and five office suites. The path that makes the most sense for you -- or your organization -- depends on many factors, including the number of systems and the reason the systems still run XP (e.g., Custom apps? Or you just haven’t bothered to upgrade yet?).
 
Apps, costs, and knowledge limit your upgrade options, though. The apps you need (or want) to use must be available for the platform you choose. Some upgrade options require new hardware, some don’t. Alternative apps often do similar tasks on different platforms but may require may require people to adapt (i.e., learn new things).
 
This week, we'll look at operating system alternatives to Windows XP. Next week, we'll examine office suite alternatives to Office 2003. 

Three conventional operating system options

Windows 7: Keep your hardware

For large enterprises and many individuals, Windows 7 may be the most obvious upgrade option, since it retains a similar look and feel to Windows XP. In most cases, Windows 7 will run on the same hardware as systems currently running XP. Download Microsoft’s Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to assess your system.

Windows 8.1: Works best with a touch screen

Microsoft’s newest operating system provides a touch-friendly, tile-based interface while also offering the ability to run older Windows software. Windows 8 does run on non-touch systems, but I find it best suited for systems with touch screens. So, an upgrade from XP to Windows 8 most likely means buying a new touch-screen device.

Upgrade tip: If you’re upgrading individual systems, I’ve found Laplink’s PCmover to be worth the cost. PCmover saves your apps and data to a file before you upgrade. Then, you do a custom install of Windows 7 to a new folder on your system. After that completes, run PCmover again to unbundle your apps and data. It isn’t perfect, but it saves a lot of time otherwise spent reinstalling apps and copying files.

OS X Mavericks: Change platform, with access to apps

Individuals or small businesses may choose to move to the Mac. Many major software vendors make applications that run on both platforms. Emulators, such as Apple’s Boot Camp and Parallels, make it possible to install and run Windows and Windows apps on the Mac. However, not all peripherals, such as printers and scanners, work with both platforms.

Four alternative operating systems

iOS or Android devices: Robust portable computing

A smartphone or tablet may be all many people need, especially when occasionally paired with an external keyboard. Both platforms offer a rich ecosystem of apps, and both are widely used. For many users, a smartphone or tablet provides “just enough” computing power. Mobility and connectivity offer the opportunity to rethink how work gets done. 

Linux: Keep your hardware (but know what you’re doing)

For organizations with sufficient technical expertise (or support), the open source Linux operating system may be a viable alternative. For example, I know of a legal aid society that moved entirely to open source software because the tools both did the job and aligned with the organization’s philosophy. Open source software provides a level of transparency not available with other systems. Security-conscious organizations may find that essential.

Chromebooks / Chrome OS: When the web is enough

If your organization already uses Google Apps, you might replace some of your XP machines with Chromebooks. Unless people need to run non-web apps, Chrome OS and web apps are certainly enough for many users. Chromebooks offer fast boot times and no-hassle access to the web. The low price of most Chromebooks also makes the devices an appealing option for organizations with large numbers of obsolete Windows XP machines.
 
A unique benefit that Chrome OS offers is that people using Chrome OS can login to the Chrome browser on Windows or Mac systems. Most apps, extensions, passwords, and the browser history can be synced across platforms. Once you move 100% to the web with Chrome OS, you can work effectively in Chrome on any Chrome, Windows, or Mac system.

Think before you upgrade

The end of life of XP and Office 2003 offers a chance to rethink the tools you use. The simplest upgrade path is to move to a newer version of Windows and Office and call your task complete. But by doing so, you may miss the opportunity to leverage smartphones, tablets, and web apps -- all of which didn’t previously exist as they do today. Finally, I’ll suggest that people who adapt quickly will be more productive than people for whom change is a chore

LG to launch world's first All in One Chrome OS computer

The LG Chromebase
The Chromebase will be the first desktop computer to run Google's cloud-based operating system and will be demonstrated for the first time at the International CES in January.
 
Designed to be fast and simple to use, the Chrome OS and all of its applications exist online where they are perpetually updated and improved, meaning that Chrome computers contain very little on their hard drives.
 
This makes them potentially virus-free and ensures that they boot up in seconds, rather than minutes.
 
As well as fast operating speeds, the Chromebase boasts a full HD 21.5-inch display and the whole device is housed in a clean, minimal white angle-poise shell.
 
The low-power and low-graphics operating system allows computer companies to use much more basic components and processors, but LG has chosen to go in the opposite direction and as well as an excellent display, the computer gets a latest-generation Intel Celeron processor, integrated speakers and a 1-megapixel webcam.
 
However, in keeping with other Chrome computers, the Chromebase only gets a 16BG solid state hard drive, meaning that if users want more space they'll have to look to the cloud or invest in a standalone hard drive.
 
Connecting one shouldn't be a problem, though as the computer offers 3 USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port, as well as HDMI in.
 
The International CES opens its doors to the public on January 7.

The top 5 problems with Linux


I have been using Linux for many years. I consider myself well-versed in the open-source kernel and its associated operating systems. When I first started using Linux distributions, the community dreamed of a day when it would become the dominant force in computing.
 
Well, arguably, the time is now. You see, Android is now the most popular mobile operating system and ChromeOS is making big strides in education -- both operating systems use the Linux kernel. Also, Unix-like operating systems power 66 percent of the web (47 percent of which is Linux). However, Linux is not perfect and is still trailing on the desktop to Microsoft. Below are what I view as the top five problems with Linux.
 
5. Different desktop managers lead to a fragmented experience
 
I am a big fan of the Gnome desktop environment and conversely I dislike KDE (but I do respect it). Unfortunately, in the Linux community, this story is all too common. It equates to the old Chevy vs. Ford, Coke vs. Pepsi and Xbox vs. PlayStation debates. However, with Linux, there is also XFCE, Unity, Cinnamon, etc. -- all of which have associated "fan-boys". In other words, the community is vastly divided by tribal identity.
 
While many may point to the freedom of user-interface choice as a positive (and it can be), I would also argue that it is a negative. You see, from a trouble-shooting perspective, it is almost impossible to direct a Linux user over the phone or instant-messenger by just knowing their distribution. If a user seeking help says they are on Ubuntu, you cannot be sure that they are on Unity -- they may be on KDE, Gnome or something else which ultimately can lead to confusion.
 
A lack of familiarity and shared experiences fragments users since they do not have a shared rallying point. A screenshot of an OS X or Windows desktop is immediately recognizable; the countless Linux desktops? Not so much.
 
4. Too many package managers makes Linux hard to learn and master
 
Many Linux newbies start with Ubuntu. This should not take away from Ubuntu; it is a testament to its smart design and ease of use. In the terminal or on the command-line, these users will learn the apt package manager commands, as that is what Ubuntu uses. Sadly, these new Linux users will think the apt package manager is the only package manager. There are many other managers such as YUM and Pacman. These package managers use entirely different commands which can be confusing.
 
For the most part, that is fine if they never stray from Ubuntu. However, if they do stray, they will be in for a rude awakening and frustration when the commands they know and love no longer work. How can a user master Linux and become an expert when an unfamiliar package manager can cause a beginner-like regression?

3. Lack of software 
 
This is a sore subject for many, as Linux-purists and loyalist will eagerly point you to wonderful alternatives that can be acceptable. Need Adobe Photoshop? Use Gimp. Need Microsoft Office? Use LibreOffice. For basic users, these alternatives may work (and work well). However, true professionals cannot trust their careers and reputations to alternative software. Open-source ideology be damned, Microsoft Office will create more compatible files and lead to a more successful employee.
 
While Linux distributions offer wonderful photo-managing and editing, video-editing is poor to non-existent. There is no way around it -- to properly edit a video and create something professional, you must use Windows or Mac.
 
A good example of software woe is, to protect my father from malware, I built him a computer using Linux Mint. I figured, since he lives in the browser, a Linux desktop with Google Chrome would be ideal and safe. For a while, this worked like a dream. However, one day his printer broke so he had to go to the store to buy another.
 
He wanted a wireless one so he could put the printer in another room. Of course, the HP setup CD-ROM did not support Linux and setting up a networked printer manually was not something he knew how to do. This lead to headaches and disappointment and in the end he had to return the printer (I later installed Windows 7 at his request and installed the printer for him).

Overall, there are no true killer Linux applications that a Windows user would lust over. However, conversely, Linux users have plenty to be envious of -- Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Netflix support and much more.
 
2. Hardware compatibility
 
Linux has come a long way regarding hardware compatibility. In fact, I would say that Linux now offers a better out-of-the-box experience than Windows or Mac for basic hardware detection. However, out-of-the-box is not the end-all-be-all. Hardware will be released after that kernel release and some accessory hardware will not have the needed software to interface.
 
When I bought my first Nexus phone, the Galaxy Nexus, I was in pure Android heaven. However, that device did away with USB Mass Storage and opted instead for MTP. Sadly, this caused the device not to interface with Linux properly. It was not until much later that lengthy and convoluted instructions were posted on the internet that enabled flaky performance at best. It is only very recently that MTP support has started working out of the box.
 
Another example happened to a friend of mine who is in the Army and purchased a Garmin GPS running watch. After running and working out, you can connect the watch to a computer to upload the data. Unfortunately, the watch was not recognized by Linux (Ubuntu 13.04) and even if it had been, there was no Garmin software for it to interface with. Unfortunately, I had to set up a dual boot with Windows; an embarrassing moment since I was the one who got him started on Linux.
 
1. Linus Torvalds is mortal
 
Linus Torvalds, the founder of the Linux kernel is a remarkable man. However, his intelligence and prowess is rivaled by his outlandish and controversial behavior -- hurling profanities at Nvidia and insulting kernel developers are two examples that come to mind. Ultimately, it is his project and he is the keeper of the kernel; he maintains it. The problem is, Linus will not live forever and his death can cause grave consequences. You see, once Mr. Torvalds is no longer living, a new top kernel maintainer and protector must be named. This can potentially cause a schism in the project or even worse -- lead to its demise.
 
Linus Torvalds is both a gift and a curse for the Linux community. Obviously, the entire thing would not exist without him. However, developers and users only tolerate his behavior as he is the father of the creation; he is not often second-guessed (those that do will feel his wrath). Even if a capable successor is named, their intentions and decisions will always be questioned. Eventually, the entire project could be forked into irrelevance.
 
Conclusion
 
Despite these five problems, Fedora will continue to be my main operating system at home on my desktop; I can personally get by without Windows or Mac. However, I still maintain Windows and Hackintosh installs just in case.

New stats show Windows 8 usage up sharply as XP usage plummets

Summary: The latest monthly NetMarketShare reports contain a few eyebrow-raising numbers. Windows 8 is up sharply, XP usage has plummeted, and Google's Chrome browser seems to be falling out of favor. But this month's report might need a big asterisk to account for a key methodology change.
 
On the first day of each month, the good folks at Net Applications release their NetMarketShare statistics, which measure worldwide usage share of desktop and mobile operating systems and browsers.
 
This month’s numbers, covering August 2013, contain several eyebrow-raising blips:
  • After posting steady but unspectacular monthly gains since its launch last October, Windows 8 usage spiked up dramatically, going from 5.42 percent to 7.65 percent of worldwide web usage in the course of a single month.
  • Windows XP usage, which had been dropping at a similarly steady but unremarkable pace, suddenly and dramatically plummeted from 37.19 percent to 33.66 percent.
  • Google’s Chrome browser showed a sudden drop in usage, plunging in one month from 17.76 percent to 16 percent. Every other browser gained in percentage terms, with Internet Explorer hitting a two-year high of 57.6 percent.
With a worldwide installed base of nearly 1.5 billion PCs, each one of those moves represents a shift of tens of millions.
What happened? Did 40 million people suddenly wake up to the fact that support for Windows XP is ending in a matter of months and rush out to replace their outmoded machines with shiny new Windows 8 devices?
 
Sorry, no.
 
The real explanation might be more prosaic: Net Applications recently changed its formula for measuring usage. In an undated note labeled “Important methodology change,” the company explains:
This month we start deducting hidden pages from our usage share statistics. Hidden pages are pages that are rendered but never viewed by the user, therefore, they should not be included in usage share data. An example of a hidden page is a page that loads in a background tab upon the launch of the browser and is never made visible.
That note appears to have been added to the site in July, although it's not clear from the note when the new methodology took effect. The change in methodology is intended to help measure actual behavior by PC users rather than background activities performed by browser code. Previously, the company’s stats had excluded prerendered pages, which Chrome uses to load pages in the background as a Google user types a search request. In February 2012, prerendered pages accounted for 4.8 percent of Chrome pages. In June 2013, that number was over 12 percent.
 
This month’s change goes still further. In its FAQ page, Net Applications notes the impact of hidden pages on the raw page counts from different browser families. These figures were measured in June 2013:

  • Internet Explorer 0.70 percent
  • Firefox 6.38 percent
  • Safari 0.15 percent
  • Opera 6.33 percent
  • Chrome 5.60 percent
If you factor those methodology changes in and assume all other factors are equal, both Firefox and Opera should have seen greater drops in usage than Chrome. Yet the usage share for each of those browsers was up, with only Chrome showing a drop. It will take a few more months of data to confirm whether this is a trend or just a blip.
 
That methodology change also suggests one possible reason for the apparent sudden drop in Windows XP’s usage. Windows XP users, blocked from using the most recent versions of Internet Explorer, are more likely to use an alternative browser such as Chrome or Firefox, both of which use hidden pages. Windows 8 users, by contrast, are more likely to use the standards-compliant Internet Explorer 10 (and IE 11 in Windows 8.1).
 
A few more nuggets worth noting from this month’s report:
  • Windows 8 (7.65 percent) now has more users worldwide than all versions of OS X combined (7.26 percent). Extrapolating that number from the worldwide installed base of desktop and portable PCs suggests that more than 100 million Windows 8 PCs are now in use.
  • Despite being available only as a preview release and then for less than 60 days, Windows 8.1 earned enough share (0.24 percent) to gain a place on the chart.
  • After more than two years on the market, Google’s Chrome OS still hasn’t garnered enough usage to cross the 0.1 percent threshold that Net Applications requires for an entry in the monthly list. Alas, comparisons to Microsoft's Windows RT aren't possible, as Windows RT stats are included with Windows 8.
All of these numbers need to be placed in the context of a shifting market, of course. Worldwide, consumers and businesses are buying fewer traditional desktop and portable PCs and spending more on tablets and other mobile devices. But with an installed base of 1.5 billion or so PCs it's still a force to be reckoned with.

Would you pay $299 for Google Chromebook?




"Beginning this week Acer and Samsung Chromebooks will be available starting at $299", Googler Venkat Rapaka blogs today. Is that price low enough for you or perhaps as present for a relative? For $100 more than Kindle Fire, you get a keyboard, double the storage (16GB vs 8GB), similar cloud connected benefits, comparable battery life and bigger display. Well, I had to ask.

If you want to answer, fire off in comments. This is a serious question. Because there is a right price, one making Chromebook an appealing alternative to a new laptop or tablet. Before the price cuts, Acer and Sumsung models started at 349.99. Some commenter surely will claim price cuts are sure sign Chromebooks aren't selling well. Oh yeah? Consider this: Samsung is releasing a black Series 5 Chromebook (to go  alongside grey and white ones) and prices fall for lots of reasons, such as economies of scale when products sell well, lower component prices or holiday prices. Reasons aside, is $299 low enough for you?

Amazon already lists the Acer AC700-1099 Chromebook for $299.99. Specs: 11.6-inch LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 resolution; 16:9 aspect ratio; Intel Atom N570 dual-core processor; 2GB DDR RAM; 16GB SSD; Graphics Media Accelerator 3150; 1.3MP HD Webcam with noise cancelling microphone; two USB 2.0 ports; 4-in-1 memory card slot; HDMI port; WiFi N; and Chrome OS. The Acer Chromebook is about the same size as MacBook Air and some Windows PC ultrabooks, but selling for $700 and $600-$700 less, respectively.


Chromebooks run Google's ChromeOS, which heavily relies on the cloud but not exclusively. Main benefits include:
  • Fast start-up (about 13 seconds)
  • Near instant recovery from sleep (about 1 second) 
  • Ease of setup -- just log into Google account -- that's it
  • Long battery life, which for my Chromebook was 8 hours or more
I got a taste of this alternate computing universe when during August and September a Samsung Series 5 Chromebook was my primary PC early on and exclusive one for most of the two months. In early October, I gave up my Chromebook experiment, switching to the delightful (and considerably faster) Lenovo ThinkPad T420s. But others carry the torch. Ian Betteridge is near the end of his own 30-day Chromebook adventure. 

My 70 year-old mom continues to use a Chromebook, for nearly four months now. I've heard no complaints, but no praise either. Her G5 iMac developed graphics problems. I couldn't afford to buy her a new Mac, and there was a spare Chromebook in my bedroom closet. I wouldn't have spent $449.99 on a Samsung Chromebook (price at the time) over a low-cost laptop. But I would consider $299.  

BetaNews reader S. Deemer is a Chromebook user: "I travel a lot by motorcycle, and the Chromebook makes a perfect travelling companion, with long battery life and, for the odd time when no Wi-Fi is available,
3G data connectivity without paying extra for a monthly plan. I have never used up the entire 100mb monthly 3G data allocation".
 


Matt Plemmons is another, in September writing: "I have been using my chromebook exclusively for 3 months now. While there where some question marks in the beginning, frequent updates have remedied most buggyness and with the onset of offline Gmail, Calendar and Docs I see this product really blooming". 

Commenter boby_k doesn't share the enthusiasm: "I have Chrome machine that Google sent me. I don't like the hardware and with 100MB plan, it is almost useless. I keep it in my car for occasional use. Wireless connection takes too long and is not ready when browser comes up most of the time".
