Apple prices iPhone 6 Plus for maximum damage vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Summary: Starting at $299 with a two-year contract, the iPhone 6 Plus may have just boxed in Samsung's ability to charge a premium for its latest Galaxy Note phablets.

Apple covered its pricing bases with the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but the big question is whether the larger 5.5-inch version of the device will inflict damage on the Samsung Galaxy Note franchise.

Marketing chief Phil Schiller outlined the iPhone 6 Plus pricing and the entry price is $299 with two-year contract. The iPhone 6 will start at $199 with two-year contract. The iPhone 5s moves to $99 and the 5c is free.

Here's a look:

Coming just a week after Samsung's Unpacked event that outlined the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, Apple's pricing is notable. For instance, Samsung's Galaxy S5 starts at $199 with a two-year contract, but has been discounted via promotions at carriers. The Galaxy Note 3 will run you $199 with a two-year contract. Samsung execs didn't outline the pricing for the Note 4, but did say it would have a premium price point.

Apple may have just set the price point for Samsung.

The Galaxy Note and iPhone 6 Plus will roughly have the same screen sizes and features. Samsung has a stylus and some innovative writing features. However, Apple has enough going with the iPhone 6 Plus to dictate pricing to Samsung.

Get ready for a serious marketing and potentially pricing battle between Samsung and Apple.
